Summer Day Camp 2022

Town of DeWitt Community!

Click here for more information & to register for Summer Day Camp

Thank you to our Dewitt community – and neighboring communities – our first all online Summer Day Camp (SDC) was a success!

As of today (Tuesday, April 5th) almost all spots for campers are filled. However, we are following up with a few resident families who are on the waiting list to confirm their registration.

We also have a non-resident waiting list we are working through Wednesday and Thursday (4/6 & 4/7). We will be contacting those families on the non-resident wait list and letting them know if we have any spots still available.

Due to space limitations at the Tecumseh Elementary School, as well as staffing challenges, we needed to limit SDC enrollment to approximately 150 campers. However, we look forward to an expanded program in 2023 when a larger facility may be available and we have roll-over staff from this year ready to go!

Thank you again to all of the folks who helped us “build community” by encouraging young people to contact us and apply to staff Summer Day camp…we couldn’t have done it without you!

Below are the details about Summer Day Camp, 2022; we are doing some things differently this year, so please read the information carefully.

We will contact all registered families via email by the end of the first week in May to let you know when you need to come in to submit all the necessary paperwork, immunity records, etc. (Due to staffing shortages in the Recreation Dept., we have to schedule days and times to complete the registration process.) We will do our best to accommodate special requests.

  • In that email we will assign you a day and time to bring all of the paperwork into the office – we will have extended office hours and a weekend day(s) available – and complete registration; we will do everything we can to ensure you are assigned a time convenient for you.
  • If special accommodations need to be made, we will work with you to support the completion of registration.

Summer Day Camp 2022 will be held at Tecumseh Elementary School.

  • Camp runs from July 5th through August 12th.
  • Camp this year will be full day only; from 7:30am-5:15pm for all campers.
  • Morning drop-off hours will be 7:30am-9:00am; Afternoon pick-up from 3:30pm-5:15pm.
  • FYI, we are not able to offer busing or swimming this year; fuel prices and driver availability make it prohibitive; those dollars needed to go to materials cost increases and more significantly, an incremental increase for day camp staff* (see more information below)
  • We will have water fun days and on-site special events, too!

Full Payment of $675 is due when you come into your appointment at the Recreation Dept. to submit all of your paperwork. If you need a payment plan, see below.**

Camp Costs:

  • Registration fee was $15
  • Cost of camp: $675
    • **We can offer only one payment plan:
      • $300 due at the time paperwork is turned in, turn in followed by
      • 2 payments of $187.50 on June 1st and July 1st.

Three field trips will be offered during the 6-weeks; there will be a separate registration and fee for field trips. More information on field trips will be released at a later date. There will also be three special events on-site at no additional cost.

*We recognize that the economic challenges to families due to the pandemic are significant and on-going. As you are likely well aware, low wage jobs have benefitted from wage increases over the last two years; that’s good news! However, that has impacted the wages we now need to offer our Summer Day Camp staff, too.

Our primary objectives for Summer Day Camp are to provide children a fun, safe, enriching camp experience and to provide families a reasonably priced summer camp option. We took into consideration several factors in determining the cost for SDC; wage increases, fuel prices, inflation, and most of all…the need for many families to have a full day camp option. (The price of $675 per camper comes out to approximately $2.31/hour, per camper.)

We also manage rentals for all of our Town parks and facilities, and the electronic community signs located at Bishop Grimes Jr/Sr High School and the intersection of Erie Boulevard and East Genesee Street.

Youth Programs
DeWitt is proud to be one of the only municipalities in the area to offer before and after school programs to children in grades K-6. Our long running, well loved summer Day Camp program welcomes over 400 children every year and includes arts and crafts, sports and games, musical arts and drama, special events and field trips. Other popular youth programs include sports camps, art classes, nature programs, soccer and more!

Adult Programs
Fitness classes, golf lessons, defensive driving, boating safety and athletic programs are just some of the opportunities available to adults through the Recreation Department. We partner with local instructors and organizations to offer a wide variety of fun and informative programs.

Senior Programs
The Town of DeWitt has three senior center locations in East Syracuse, DeWitt and Jamesville. Each center offers a unique combination of programming that ranges from art classes to playing cards to health screenings all for little to no cost. Other popular senior programs include bridge, chorus, table tennis, light weight training, bowling and golf. Seniors may also enjoy a variety of trips to local theatres or other attractions, or a selection of overnight trips to shows, historic towns and other exciting locations!
